Wildlife Safe Fishing Kits and Recycling Stations Initiative

Fishing gear left behind in coastal environments causes significant harm to wildlife. Birds, turtles, marine mammals, and shore animals are frequently injured by barbed hooks, discarded lines, and improperly stored equipment. EchoWild is developing an initiative to reduce these preventable injuries by distributing Wildlife Safe Fishing Kits and installing Fishing Line Recycling Stations at high-use fishing areas across East Hampton.

This program is designed to promote safer fishing practices, support wildlife rescue efforts, and engage the angling community in proactive conservation.

Wildlife Safe Fishing Kits

Each kit will offer practical tools that help minimize accidental harm to wildlife:

  1. Barbless Hooks: Reduce injury risk to both fish and unintended wildlife.

  2. Biodegradable Fishing Line: Breaks down more safely in the environment.

  3. Line Cutters: Allow anglers to quickly free tangled or injured animals.

  4. Educational Materials: Clear guidance on safe handling of accidental wildlife catches, responsible gear disposal, and information about EchoWild’s rescue work.

These kits will be distributed at fishing supply stores, marinas, angler events, and community conservation days.

Fishing Line Recycling Stations

EchoWild will install dedicated bins at popular fishing locations to reduce entanglement and ingestion injuries caused by discarded lines.

Purpose: Provide an accessible, responsible disposal method for used line.

Locations: Piers, docks, marinas, beaches, and other areas with high fishing activity.

Design: Weather-resistant bins clearly marked with EchoWild branding and instructions.
